PTSD Therapy

Trauma, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) are significant mental health concerns that can have profound effects on individuals’ lives. At Wave Counselling and Wellness, our therapists offer specialized PTSD therapy to support individuals in processing and healing from traumatic experiences.

Understanding Trauma:

Trauma refers to experiences or events that are deeply distressing or disturbing and overwhelm an individual’s ability to cope. Traumatic experiences can vary widely and may include:

  • Physical, sexual, or emotional abuse
  • Accidents or natural disasters
  • Witnessing violence or death
  • Combat or military service
  • Neglect or abandonment
  • Loss of a loved one

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD):

PTSD is a mental health condition that can develop in individuals who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. Symptoms of PTSD may include:

  1. Intrusive Memories: Flashbacks, nightmares, or distressing memories of the traumatic event.
  2. Avoidance: Avoiding reminders of the trauma, including people, places, or activities associated with the event.
  3. Negative Changes in Thinking and Mood: Persistent negative beliefs, feelings of guilt or shame, and difficulty experiencing positive emotions.
  4. Hyperarousal: Hypervigilance, irritability, difficulty sleeping, and exaggerated startle response.

Complex PTSD (C-PTSD):

Complex PTSD, also known as developmental trauma disorder, can develop in individuals who have experienced prolonged or repeated trauma, particularly in childhood. In addition to PTSD symptoms, C-PTSD may include:

  1. Emotional Dysregulation: Intense and fluctuating emotions, difficulty managing emotions, and emotional outbursts.
  2. Interpersonal Difficulties: Problems with relationships, attachment issues, and difficulty trusting others.
  3. Negative Self-Concept: Low self-esteem, feelings of worthlessness, and a sense of being damaged or flawed.
  4. Distorted Perceptions of Perpetrators: Confusion or ambivalence towards perpetrators of abuse, including feelings of loyalty or guilt.
